INFORMATION & PURCHASE

Many teachers are required to teach sexuality in their classrooms. As sexuality is a delicate subject, it can be difficult to know the best way to approach it. Trends in sexuality also change over the years, and many teachers can be left at a loss for understanding the needs of their students. After several requests, these activity kits have been designed as a tool to help teachers understand the various subjects in this area and the depths at which they can explore them.

The kits are session plans complete with instructions and all the playing pieces to create fun and informative classes in sex ed! The kits are created for an average classroom size of 30 and smaller. They are designed for grade levels 7 to 10 but can be modified for younger groups or students with special needs.

All the components in the kits come laminated and designed for reuse many times. Each kit also comes with discussion questions and suggestions for follow-up assignments. These activity kits are designed as supplements to a comprehensive sexuality education program.

TESTIMONIALS

« I just wanted to give you some feedback on the Barriers to Protection kit. I used it today as an introduction to our unit on contraceptives. It was a great intro activity and generated some interesting debates. The activity led to a discussion on sending clear messages, respecting others as well as yourself, and coming up with responses they felt comfortable with to using protection.

It worked well and I am looking forward to using the Hi/Low kit during our next class on STI's»

Getting It On The Right Way

Many students already know about condoms and that they should be using them for protection. For many youth, condoms are the only barriers they use for disease and unwanted pregnancies. Condoms are often thought to be unreliable, but the failure rate of a condom is very low if used correctly. Using a condom the right way is just as important as using one. This game spells out thirteen steps to using a condom correctly.

Barriers to Protection

Students can be creative in their reasons not to use sexual protection. Even though the majority of students are aware of sexual risks, the tendency of youth is to believe that they are not vulnerable and are not susceptible. It is this belief that fosters the idea that the drawbacks to protection are greater than the benefits. This game lists many of the complaints about protection heard from teens, and asks the students to think about which gender would be more likely to use this excuse. The idea of this game is not to credit these complaints, but rather to expose them and give students the tools they may need to rebut them.

Included: Boy/ Girl/ Either Gender category cards, 30 barriers to protection cards
Concept: Students match the barriers to the gender they feel is most likely to fit. Discussion may follow on solutions to these barriers as well as on gender stereotyping

Baby Risks

By the time they reach adolescence, most students know how babies are made. Some students however do not fully understand which sexual activities can lead to pregnancy and which do not. This is a great game for students to cement the information from a chapter on anatomy and reproduction. This game has students match sexual activities to the categories of high risk, possibility and no risk groups for pregnancy.

Concept: Students match the sexual activities to the categories. Activities are color coded to match their appropriate category

Take a Stand

Our values and beliefs about sexual issues are largely formed during the adolescent years. Helping students understand why they believe in the things they do is important in helping them to make good decisions. This exercise also demonstrates the diversity in values and can begin to show students that others do not always think the same way when it comes to sexual issues. The important element of this exercise is having students hear from each other on why they agree or disagree with the statements.

Included: Agree/ Disagree/ Neutral placement cards, instructor statements
Concept: This game helps students understand their values in relation to others. The three signs are posted at opposite corners of the room, the instructor reads out a statement, and the students will move to the corner they feel suits their values best. This is a more physical game and useful for classes that enjoy moving.

Love or Illusion

Teens can often have blurred boundaries when it comes to close and intimate relationships. Many teens get hurt by one another and do not have an understanding of the impact that their actions may have. While no one enters a relationship in hopes of being abused, the number of adolescent relationships that are abusive or coercive in some way is astounding. This activity kit outlines some of the everyday behaviors that occur between friends or partners and asks students to rate them as healthy or unhealthy activities. The idea here is to get students thinking about three things: -what behaviors in a relationship are acceptable for them -the characteristics of a relationship they wish to be involved in -the impact of their own actions on another person and the relationship.

Included: Healthy/ Not Healthy/ It Depends category cards, 32 activity cards
Concept: Students match the actions on the cards to the categories they believe fit best. Discussion follows on the actions in the three categories. Students can also discuss a map for what they believe is a healthy relationship.

Cool Scenes

Relationships are often scenario based and many times we don't know how we will feel about a situation until we are in it. Sexuality is also based on values and helping youth to identify these values is a crucial part of sex education. This game illustrates different scenarios and asks students to vote on whether the scene is cool or not. A brief discussion between each scenario should occur.

Included: 40 Cool/ Not Cool cards, instructor scenarios
Concept: This game is an overview of values relating to topics on using protection, sexual coercion, dating and relationships in general. The instructor will read out a scenario and students hold up the Cool or Not Cool side of the card which reflects how they feel about the situation.
Duration: 20 minutes + discussion
Level: Grade 7-8
